Caring For Dental Implants After Surgery: What You Should Know

Our dental professional explaining recovery and hygiene tips for dental implants to a smiling patient

Getting dental implants is a big investment and a big commitment. But the results are truly unbeatable. When you replace a tooth with a dental implant, you’re investing in lifelong results, incredible stability, and a tooth that will truly look and feel natural.

Still, the process of getting a dental implant is a little bit more complicated than alternatives like partial dentures and dental bridges. So you might be wondering what’s involved, especially when it comes to post-treatment care after you get dental implant surgery at Washington Court House Dental.

In this guide, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about what to expect from dental implant surgery, how to get relief from any pain or discomfort after your procedure, what you should eat after you get dental implants, and all of the other steps you’ll need to take to ensure a complication-free recovery.

The Dental Implant Surgery Process – Step By Step

To understand the recovery process after dental implants, it’s important to understand what exactly happens during your surgery. At Washington Court House Dental, Dr. Pappas and our dental team use the latest dental technology to plan your procedure and ensure the best possible result. Here’s a step-by-step overview of what you can expect during your treatment:

Initial implant consultation

Before you can get dental implants, one of our dentists will perform an in-depth oral exam and make sure you’re a good candidate for treatment. We will also discuss any necessary preparatory treatments that may be needed before you get implants, such as tooth extractions or bone grafts. Once you’re approved, we use the latest technology to develop a comprehensive treatment plan and ensure the best outcome for your surgery.

Preparation, sedation, and numbing

At your next visit, your dentist at Washington Court House Dental will clean and prepare the implant site. Then, we will numb the treatment area to make sure you don’t feel any discomfort during the implant treatment process. We also offer laughing gas (nitrous oxide), pill-based sedation, and IV sedation to help you stay calm and relaxed throughout your visit.

Placing your implant(s)

Once the surgical site has been prepared, your dentist will create a small opening in your gums and jawbone. Then, they will use surgical tools to precisely place your titanium implant in the site based on your treatment plan. This ensures a strong hold and the best overall outcome for your procedure.

Cleaning and suturing the implant site

After your implant is in place, your dentist will clean up the site and disinfect it, then suture it to make sure that it heals properly. This process will be repeated if you are getting multiple implants. It usually takes 30-60 minutes to place each implant.

Healing and initial recovery

After your surgery, you’ll be sent home with a full list of instructions to follow as you recover from your dental implant surgery. Most patients can get back to work or school within a day or two, and the initial healing process takes 2-3 weeks. However, it will take 3-6 months for your implant to fully heal and bond with your jawbone.

Final implant restoration

As your mouth heals, you’ll come in for routine checkups with your dentist at Washington Court House Dental. They will check on your progress, make sure you’re healing properly, and begin designing your final dental implant restoration, such as a dental crown for a single-tooth implant.

Once your mouth has healed completely, you’ll come back for one last visit. Your dentist will attach your crown or other restoration, then make any final adjustments, if necessary. You’ll walk out with a brand-new, fully-functional, permanent tooth.

What To Eat After Dental Implant Surgery – Dietary Recommendations

You’ll need to eat a soft food diet after dental surgery of any kind, and this includes dental implants. Wondering what you’ll usually be able to eat after your procedure at Washington Court House Dental? Here are some general recommendations from Dr. Pappas and our team:

  • 1-3 days after surgery – At this point, it’s best to stick to very soft or liquid foods like broth, smooth soup, yogurt, pudding, applesauce, and smoothies. Less chewing means less pressure on your new implant, and it also helps you feel more comfortable during the first few days after surgery.
  • 3-7 days after surgery – You can start introducing slightly firmer foods during this time. Scrambled eggs, tofu, oatmeal, steamed vegetables, macaroni and cheese, and soft pasta are all good options.
  • 1-2 weeks after surgery – By now, you’ll have recovered significantly from your surgery, and you can keep adding firmer foods to your diet as long as they do not cause you any discomfort. This includes soft meats like chicken or fish, firmer vegetables, and non-crusty bread.
  • 3+ weeks after surgery – At this point, you should be able to eat pretty much whatever you want, including raw vegetables, crusty bread, and chewy foods like steak. As long as it’s not causing you any discomfort, you can go back to eating all of the foods you love.

Dental Implant Maintenance During Recovery – Top Tips

Along with eating a diet of mostly soft foods at first, proper dental implant maintenance is essential for keeping your new implant healthy as you heal and recover. The good news? Caring for your implant is pretty simple!

Brush and floss your teeth normally, but avoid the implant site at first

You can start brushing and flossing your teeth right away after your implant surgery, but you should avoid brushing the implant site directly for at least 48-72 hours. You may also want to consider using a manual toothbrush instead of an electric toothbrush, since the vibrations may cause discomfort during the first few days of healing.

Rinse with saltwater or prescription mouthwash

If Dr. Pappas or your dentist gave you a prescription for mouthwash, make sure you fill it and use it as directed to eliminate bacteria and keep your surgical site healthy.

You can also rinse your mouth with saltwater to keep it clean and eliminate bacteria. Mix ½ to 1 teaspoon of salt in 8oz of lukewarm water, then rinse your mouth. Do not spit, as this can dislodge the blood clot around your implant. Instead, let the liquid drip gently out of your mouth.

Take all medication as prescribed by your dentist

Depending on your situation, your dentist at Washington Court House Dental may prescribe pain medication, anti-nausea medication, or antibiotics. If so, make sure you fill these prescriptions and take all of your medications as directed.

If you do not get a prescription for pain medication, you can use an over-the-counter product like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help with any post-operative pain. If you’re not sure what to choose or what dose to take, you can just ask our team for a recommendation!

Stay hydrated and eat plenty of nutritious foods

Drinking plenty of water and eating calorie-dense, nutritious foods are both important for a proper recovery. Your body needs nutrients to rebuild the gum and jaw tissue, so do your best to drink lots of water and eat nutritious, soft foods for the first few days after your surgery, even if you don’t have much of an appetite.

Tips For A Smooth Dental Implant Recovery Process

Wondering how to relieve pain from dental implant surgery and ensure a smooth, complication-free recovery process? Here are a few more steps that you’ll need to follow after you get your implants from Dr. Pappas and the team at Washington Court House Dental.

  • Do not use a straw or spit forcefully for at least 48-72 hours – Spitting or sucking on a straw may dislodge the blood clot that forms around your implant, potentially slowing down healing and causing complications.

  • Take things easy for a few days – Heavy exertion could cause bleeding and discomfort, so we recommend avoiding exercise and other types of physical activities for a few days after your implant surgery.

  • Rest and sleep with your head elevated – Elevating your head above your heart  while you sleep or rest will help reduce bleeding, swelling, and discomfort for the first few days after your dental implant placement surgery.

  • Avoid touching the implant with your fingers or tongue – Do your best to avoid wiggling your implant around. Messing with the implant may interfere with the natural healing process and lead to a higher risk of implant failure.

  • Do not smoke or vape for 2-3 weeks, and consider quitting permanently – Similarly to using a straw or spitting, smoking and vaping can dislodge your blood clot and interfere with healing. Not only that, but all types of tobacco and nicotine use reduce blood flow, impair healing, and raise your risk of follow-ups. For the best possible outcome, you should consider quitting permanently.
  • Come to all scheduled follow-ups at our office – Make sure that you come in as scheduled for all of your visits with Dr. Pappas and the dental team at Washington Court House Dental. These checkups are important for tracking your progress, identifying any potential complications, and preparing for your permanent tooth restoration.
